Zantedeschia, commonly known as calla lilies, are popular indoor plants known for their elegant, trumpet-shaped flowers and attractive foliage. Despite their name, calla lilies are not true lilies but belong to the Araceae family.
Calla lilies have distinctive, funnel-shaped flowers (spathes) that can come in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, pink, purple, and orange. The spathe surrounds a central yellow spike called the spadix. The leaves are typically arrow-shaped, glossy, and dark green, often with white or light green spots.
Light: Zantedeschia prefers bright, indirect light. Place the plant near a window where it will receive plenty of filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the hottest part of the day, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During the active growing season (spring and summer), ensure the plant has adequate water. Reduce watering in the fall and winter when the plant enters dormancy.
Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Pruning: Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and health. After the flowers fade, cut back the spent flower stalks to encourage new growth.
