Zamia furfuracea, commonly known as the cardboard palm, is a cycad native to Mexico. Despite its name, it is not a true palm but rather belongs to the Cycadaceae family. It's a popular choice for outdoor landscaping in tropical and subtropical regions due to its striking appearance and low maintenance requirements.

Zamia furfuracea is a slow-growing cycad with a unique appearance. It features a short, thick trunk covered in coarse, overlapping leaf bases that resemble cardboard, giving rise to its common name. The trunk typically grows horizontally or at a slight angle, producing a rosette of stiff, feather-like leaves at the top.

The leaves of Zamia furfuracea are dark green and pinnate, with numerous leaflets arranged along the central leaf stalk. Each leaflet is leathery and lance-shaped, giving the foliage a feathery or fern-like appearance.

  • Sunlight: Zamia furfuracea thrives in partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, it prefers dappled sunlight or filtered shade to prevent leaf scorching.

  • Watering: Zamia furfuracea has moderate water needs and prefers consistently moist soil. Water deeply and regularly, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering frequency in winter or during periods of reduced growth.

  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for cycads in spring and summer to promote healthy growth and foliage development. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates, and avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to nutrient imbalances.

  • Pruning: Prune Zamia furfuracea as needed to remove dead or damaged leaves and to maintain a tidy appearance. Use sharp, sterile pruning tools to make clean cuts, and avoid removing too many healthy leaves, as this can stress the plant.
