Rhipsalis is a genus of epiphytic cacti native to the rainforests of Central and South America.  Rhipsalis plants have long, trailing stems that can vary in shape and texture depending on the species. Some species have cylindrical stems, while others have flattened or ribbed stems. The stems may be smooth or covered in small, scale-like structures. Unlike typical cacti, Rhipsalis plants lack spines and instead have thin, flattened or cylindrical leaves that grow along the stems. The leaves are often small and inconspicuous, serving primarily as photosynthetic organs.

  • Light: Rhipsalis hanging plants prefer bright, indirect light. Place them near a window where they can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but avoid intense midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch, typically every 1-2 weeks depending on environmental conditions. Use room temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.

  • Pruning: Remove any dead or yellowing stems or leaves regularly to maintain the plant's appearance and overall health. You can also trim back excessively long stems to encourage bushier growth.
