Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula) is a medium-sized, deciduous and fast-growing tree. It is native to the cooler temperate and boreal regions of Europe and Asia and is one of the most widely distributed trees in the world. The wood of the aspen is not particularly strong and is mainly used for veneer and paper production, as well as good quality charcoal and chip-wood. Due to its rapid growth, the tree plays an important role in bioenergy production. The tree is also known for its swaying, even in slight breezes, making it easy to recognize from a distance.
