Microsorum crocodyllus, commonly known as Crocodile Fern is named for its foliage, which resembles the textured skin of a crocodile. The fronds are leathery and have prominent ridges and grooves along their surface, giving them a reptilian appearance. The fronds emerge from a central rhizome and can grow up to 2 feet in length, creating an impressive display.
Light: Crocodile Fern prefers bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can receive filtered sunlight or in a location with bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as this can scorch the delicate fronds.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch, typically every 1-2 weeks depending on environmental conditions. Use room temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.
Fertilization: Feed Crocodile Fern with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilization in fall and winter when growth slows down.
