Gynura, commonly known as purple passion or velvet plant, is a popular indoor plant known for its striking, velvety foliage with a distinctive purple hue. The most commonly grown species indoors is Gynura aurantiaca.

Gynura aurantiaca is an attractive, fast-growing plant with fuzzy, velvety leaves covered in fine purple hairs, giving the foliage a vibrant purple sheen. The leaves are typically ovate or lance-shaped with serrated edges, adding to the plant's ornamental appeal.

  • Light: Gynura thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it will receive plenty of filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon, as it can scorch the leaves and cause the vibrant purple color to fade.

  • Watering: Water Gynura regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause the leaves to wilt and lose their vibrant color.

  • Fertilization: Feed Gynura with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

  • Pruning: Regularly pinch back the stems to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming leggy. Remove any yellow or dead leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and health.

  • Propagation: Gynura is easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take a cutting with several leaves, remove the lower leaves, and place the cutting in water or moist potting soil. Roots should develop within a few weeks, after which the cutting can be potted up.
