Dracaena compacta, also known as Dracaena Janet Craig Compacta, is a popular indoor plant known for its dense rosette of dark green, glossy leaves and its ability to thrive in low light conditions. It is a compact variety of the larger Dracaena Janet Craig, making it well-suited for small spaces and tabletops.

  • Light: Dracaena compacta thrives in low to medium light conditions. It can tolerate low light, making it an excellent choice for offices and rooms with limited natural light. However, it will grow more vigorously in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of soil are dry. Dracaena compacta is relatively drought-tolerant, so it's better to underwater than overwater. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant’s growth slows

  • Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.

  • Pruning: Prune as needed to remove any yellow or dead leaves and to maintain the desired shape. Regular pruning helps keep the plant looking neat and encourages new growth. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to avoid damaging the plant.

  • Toxicity: Dracaena compacta is toxic to pets if ingested, so keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and other animals.

  • Dusting Leaves: Keep the leaves clean by wiping them with a damp cloth to remove dust. This helps the plant photosynthesize more efficiently and maintain its glossy appearance.
