Calathea is a genus of plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences. They are commonly called calathea as prayer plants.

Calathea Orbifolia, a popular houseplant known for its strikingly large, round leaves with silvery-green stripes. This plant is a favorite among indoor plant enthusiasts for its unique foliage and air-purifying qualities. Calathea Orbifolia is characterized by its large, round, and slightly wavy leaves, each adorned with light and dark green stripes running parallel to the leaf veins. The leaves have a smooth, glossy texture and a beautiful silvery sheen, making them stand out in any indoor space.

This plant can grow to about 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) tall and wide indoors. It forms a clumping habit, with new leaves emerging from the base, creating a lush and full appearance.

Plant Care Guide:

  • Light: Calathea Orbifolia thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light conditions but will perform best with bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and cause the vibrant colors to fade.

  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry. Use distilled or rainwater to prevent leaf tip burn caused by the chlorine and fluoride in tap water. Ensure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging and root rot.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture but still allows for good aeration. A mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well to provide the right balance for the plant's roots.

  • Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup and damage the roots.

  • Pruning: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and encourage healthy new growth. Regular pruning helps keep the plant looking tidy and attractive.
