Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as butterfly pea, blue pea, or Asian pigeonwings, is a tropical vine known for its vibrant blue flowers and medicinal properties. It is an attractive and hardy plant that can be grown outdoors in suitable climates.

The plant has compound leaves with 5-7 leaflets, each leaflet being oval-shaped and bright green. The foliage provides a lush backdrop for the striking flowers. Clitoria ternatea is renowned for its stunning, deep blue, pea-like flowers with a yellowish-white center. There are also varieties with white and purple flowers. The flowers are typically 2-3 inches long and can be single or double-petaled, blooming throughout the warm months.

  • Light: Clitoria ternatea thrives in full sun to partial shade. It performs best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In very hot climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorching.

  • Watering: Water the plant regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. It is drought-tolerant once established but will perform better with regular watering, especially during dry spells.

  • Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring through fall). Over-fertilization can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.

  • Pruning: Prune the plant to control its size and shape, and to encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems. Regular pruning can also promote more prolific flowering.

  • Support: As a climbing vine, it needs support to grow properly. Provide a trellis, fence, or other structures for the plant to climb.
