Radermachera sinica, commonly known as the China Doll plant or Serpent Tree, is a popular indoor plant prized for its lush foliage and graceful growth habit. Radermachera sinica features glossy, deep green leaves that are pinnate, meaning they are arranged along a central stem like the feathers of a bird's wing. The leaves are typically lance-shaped and have serrated edges, adding to the plant's ornamental value.

Younger China Doll plants have a more compact and dense growth habit, while older specimens may develop a more open and tree-like appearance with multiple stems. The plant may produce clusters of small white flowers under optimal growing conditions, although flowering is rare indoors.

  • Light: China Doll plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight. Place them near a window where they can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. They can tolerate lower light conditions but may become leggy if light levels are too low.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch, and ensure that excess water can drain freely from the pot. Reduce watering frequency during the winter months when growth slows down.

  • Fertilization: Feed China Doll plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when growth slows down.

  • Pruning: Prune China Doll plants regularly to maintain their shape and size, as well as to remove any dead or yellowing leaves. You can also pinch back excessive growth to encourage branching and denser foliage.
