The Aphelandra squarrosa, commonly known as the Zebra Plant, is a popular houseplant admired for its striking dark green leaves with white veins, resembling zebra stripes. It also produces bright yellow bracts, which can last for several weeks, adding to its ornamental appeal. This tropical plant is native to Brazil and thrives indoors under the right care, making it a favorite among plant enthusiasts for its dramatic foliage and showy appearance.

Plant Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial shade. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so avoid placing it in a spot with harsh sun exposure.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. The Zebra Plant thrives in a humid environment, so regular watering and misting can help maintain the moisture levels. Water less frequently during the cooler months, but don't let the soil dry out completely.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix with good moisture retention. A mix for tropical plants or African violets works well. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

  • Fertilizer: Feed every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Avoid feeding during the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.

  • Pruning: Remove dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and health. You can also pinch back the tips after flowering to encourage bushier growth.
